So water the sod heavily, for 2 weeks.

How to care for new sod after winter. You will want to focus more watering attention here. Heat builds up into stacked sod, and your lawn is going to be thirsty now that it’s finally on the ground. In this post, i will discuss the required care and maintenance for new sod to keep your lawn perfect.

Don’t tread on the sod surface for at least 4 weeks. New sod can suffer damage from desiccation within the span of only a day if left too dry. Also make sure the ground is saturated, not waterlogged.

Once you have laid the sod in spring, you could consider fertilizing it close to the end of the spring season. Gauge the depth of moisture by using a long screwdriver. During the fall and spring, you can usually water once per day.

Stay off new sod until after the first mowing. Take care not to walk or run on new sod, as this can prevent the fragile young roots from developing properly. After that, water every other day for a week, then every third day for the next week.

After the sod is installed the initial watering should soak the sod and hydrate the soil below many inches. In the winter you may need to wait longer for the roots to establish prior to mowing. This is also when you should mow your new lawn for the first time after laying sod.

Keep the lawn moist at all times, preferably by frequent light sprinklings. Most new sod will only need a max of two waterings a day during the summer months. If sod comes out of place, move it back and give it extra water.
