The exact length depends on your orthodontist or dentist’s recommendation.

How many years do you have to wear retainers. The last thing you want to do is go back to where you started from and not have a straight, beautiful smile anymore. This is the average time it takes for your teeth to settle and set into place. For others, they may have to replace them every 6 months.

Some people have even been able to wear their permanent retainers for up to 20 years. For kids & teens — if you had braces done when you were a kid, it is recommended to have a permanent retainer for at least 10 years but if it is not causing any hygiene problems after 10 years. However, you can remove them when you eat or brush your teeth.

After your prescribed period of time, your orthodontist will determine if you need to wear your retainer longer. After that period of time, you will move to nighttime wear. For most teenagers and adults, wearing retainers to bed and in between meals is ideal for the first few months while the supportive tissue regains its strength.

Then the time may be reduced to 8 hours a day. From the third year to the rest of your life: Many studies, such as this one, have established that retainers reduce these risks.

You do have to wear them for almost the entire day during the first few months after you get your braces removed. Our office will schedule a few retainer check appointments withing the first two years after your braces come off to make sure there are no problems with your retainers. Once 12 months have passed, you should have enough new bone deposited around your teeth to keep them stable.

For some, a single pair of retainers might list several years. You'll typically wear this retainer full time for four months to a year after braces, only removing it when you're eating or brushing your teeth. As we get older our teeth may start to move unpredictably, often showing some crossing over and increased in crowding.
